Rest in Peace Dad

on Wed, 07/29/2015 - 02:29

On Tuesday, July 28, 2015, Ray Nunamaker passed away at his home. He was 74 years old.

The family is planning a "Celebration of Life" for August 16 and details will be released in the next few days.

Many thanks to everyone who offered their support and prayed for him since his diagnosis last August.

Health Update 7-21-15

It is hard to believe that this picture was taken last summer. We were at Watkins Glen enjoying the town, state park, wineries, and sports car racing. Dad would play badminton with the girls in an attempt by Alexa to play well enough to beat Mike Herceg in gym class. Dad was also golfing regularly and very fit, as anyone who knows him would expect.

Last week I noted that we were stopping treatment and having hospice come in. This past weekend his brother came in as did his sister, her husband, and my cousins. It was good having everyone there and catching up as we don't do it often enough.

Thanks for all your support

Since dad's diagnosis last August, I couldn't count the number of people who have reached out to all of us.

At the wrestling alumni night I was talking to Jim Karch and mentioned that I was surprised how many people outside of wrestling had shared stories about my dad. Things he did or said as a teacher or friend or actions he had taken that stuck with them. I also noted that for as many accolades as he received, I don't think he realized how much of an impact he had on so many people.

I'll paraphrase, but Jim said he's a legend. You don't just go around naming gym's after anyone.

Health Update 7-14-15

on Tue, 07/14/2015 - 04:43

Last Wednesday we were scheduled to meet with dad's doctor to find out if he was eligible for a trial of an immunotherapy drug. It was three weeks after our last appointment. In order to be eligible, they had to do some lab work to determine if he had a certain gene marker. With it he was eligible, without it not.

As it turned out the lab work was not ready. So it didn't make sense to make the trip. In addition to that, a lot has happened since our last visit. His condition has deteriorated significantly. His vision is much worse in both peripheral vision and depth perception.

Pre Facebook - Forum Chat

on Thu, 07/09/2015 - 17:50

I came across this forum chat from Massachusetts from 2008, over ten years after dad retired from coaching, which referenced him.

The forum was on and the discussion was around Ryan Krecker's last minute cement job that gave Nazareth the win over Easton in the District Duals.

One person referenced dad's videotape series and the other replied, " I also do very much agree with you on Coach Nunamaker. He is one of the most entertaining, and classiest gentlemen I have ever met.

Happy Father's Day from the Nunamaker's

on Mon, 06/22/2015 - 01:15

Every Father's Day weekend my daughters have their dance recital. For the uninitiated dance runs from September until June and girls perform one routine at the recital for each class they take during the year. This means that for nine months of work they perform four shows over one weekend. For my daughters, who finished their 11th and 7th grade, this year they had 11 and 8 numbers per show. My wife and I go to each show and typically different family and friends will come to different shows.

For the past 11 years my parents came to one of the shows with us, but this year my dad couldn't

Health Update 6-17-15

Today, Ray had an MRI and we saw his neuro-oncologist at the John Theurer Cancer Center, a part of Hackensack University Medical Center. A lot of people have recommended some of the better known cancer centers, but this center was ranked #37 in the country and the only area they were not ranked well in was reputation, which I could understand, because I had never heard of either the hospital or the cancer center until it was recommended we meet with this doctor through a trusted and very knowledgable family friend.

While he had his MRI, mom and I took a walk around the block, where I took

Blue Eagle Wall of Fame Induction

on Sat, 05/23/2015 - 13:24

On Friday, May 22, Ray Nunamaker became the first non-alumni inducted into the Nazareth Area Blue Eagle Education Foundation's Wall of Fame.

The gala and silent auction was held at Woodstone Country Club and honored, David Lobach, '67; Robert Shriver, '90; Glennys Young, '77; and Ray Nunamaker as an honorary alumni.

The event was MC'd by Vic Lesky, longtime Superintendent and Principal at Nazareth. There were roughly 150 people in attendance including many former teaching colleagues and students.

I was really glad that dad was able to attend.

Health Update 5-22-15

on Fri, 05/22/2015 - 18:09

We last visited dad's neuro-oncologist on May 5. The visit was roughly halfway through his two six week cycles of BCNU and Avastin. The BCNU is administered once each six weeks and the Avastin every other week. At the visit the doctor encouraged dad to get more active now that winter was behind us and the change in his medications had made him feel better and more like himself than he had been.

After the visit dad definitely showed more of a willingness to be active even using the recumbant bike we had gotten him for Christmas.

Happy Easter 2015!
